Ramadan

Ramadan is here again and I've remembered just how much I hate it. The idea is good, feeling the pain of the poor and all, but the execution in Bangladesh is horrendous. I don't think that he poorest people here spend their days starving so that they can gorge themselves as soon as the sun goes down. I doubt they spend hundreds of dollars on feasts and new clothes. I can't imagine Bangladesh's poor are sleeping in until 11:00 because they spent the night celebrating.

Ramadan here doesn't make a difference in he lives of the poor. The street beggars may make a little more money, because you're supposed to give more at this time of year, but the sustenance farmer outside the city is still wondering if he'll have enough rice to feed his family. Ramadan turns a country of people with little respect for others and minimal common courtesy into 30 million raving assholes. Petty theft like purse snatching or stealing from employers goes up. Car jacking becomes an almost common occurrence in more affluent neighborhoods. Traffic accidents and hit and runs go through the roof as "starving" people race to gorge themselves at sundown.

If I didn't risk death threats for criticizing the Islamic religion I'd say a Christmas-like "reason for the season" campaign is in order. Then again, seeing how well that's worked out for the Christians, it may be better to just leave well enough alone.

I want to look into mirroring my normal blog here. Something to do.
